# Taking Apart & Rebuilding

Observe that an object made of a small set of pieces can be disassembled and made into a new object, understanding that the pieces still exist

Subject: Science · Area: Matter & Materials · Ages 7 to 8

## Ready when they can

- Explain that taking apart an object and rebuilding it uses the same pieces in a new arrangement
- Describe how the pieces themselves don't change even though the object looks different
- Give an everyday example of reusing materials to make something new

## Lesson: Same Pieces, New Thing

Some toys are made of small pieces, like building bricks. When you take the toy apart, the pieces do not disappear. They are still there, just not connected anymore.

*(drawing: The same bricks make a tower, then loose pieces, then a car.)*

**Example.** Mia built a tower out of 8 bricks. She took the tower apart and used all 8 bricks to build a little car. She did not add new bricks or throw any away.

**Tip.** Before you build something new, count your pieces first and after. The number should stay the same. Only the shape changes.

**Recap.** Taking a thing apart does not lose the pieces. The same pieces can build something brand new.
