# Taxonomy, the Three Domains and What a Species Name Encodes

A two-word species name places an organism inside a nested hierarchy, and every rank in that hierarchy is a claim about shared ancestry. The three-domain split was forced by molecular evidence that contradicted the older picture, which is why classification is treated as a hypothesis rather than a filing system.

## Lesson: Naming life by its family tree

Living things sit inside a nested hierarchy, from broad domains down to single species. Every rank is a claim that its members share an ancestor.

**Example.** Quercus alba names the white oak with two words: Quercus for the genus, alba for the species. That name pins the exact twig the organism sits on.

Molecular evidence split the old prokaryotes into two domains, Bacteria and Archaea, beside Eukarya. A clade holds one ancestor plus all its descendants, marked by traits that ancestor passed down.

**Tip.** Treat every classification as a hypothesis, not a filing system. Lookalike features from convergent evolution mislead, and new evidence can revise the tree.
