## Ready when they can

- Explain that temperature describes how hot or cold something is
- Identify a thermometer as the tool used to measure temperature
- Use words like hot, warm, cool, and cold appropriately to describe air temperature

## Lesson: Temperature and thermometers

Temperature tells us how hot or cold something is. A snowy day feels cold. A summer day can feel hot.

A thermometer is a tool that measures temperature. It shows a number that tells us how hot or cold the air is.

*(drawing: The summer day bar is taller. It shows a higher temperature.)*

**Example.** Ben checks the thermometer each morning. Today it shows a high number, so he says the day feels hot. He wears a t-shirt instead of a coat.

You can describe air with these words: hot, warm, cool, or cold. Pick the word that matches how it really feels.

**Recap.** A thermometer measures temperature, and words like hot, warm, cool, and cold describe how the air feels.
