# The Eye as a Receptor Organ

The eye converts light into nerve impulses, and every part of it exists to serve that conversion: the lens to focus, the iris to control intensity, the retina to transduce. The common sight defects are all failures of focus, and each correction follows from where the image lands.

## Lesson: Your eye turns light into signals

Light enters through the cornea, which starts bending the rays. It passes the pupil, whose size the iris controls: wider in dim rooms, narrower in bright ones. Then the lens fine-tunes the focus so rays land sharply on the retina. The retina converts light into electrical signals, which leave through the optic nerve.

The retina lines the back of the eye with rods and cones. When light hits them, they turn it into electrical signals. Those signals travel along the optic nerve to the brain, which builds the picture you see.

**Example.** To focus on a near book, muscles let the lens thicken, shortening its focal length for close rays. For far hills, the same muscles relax to let the lens stretch flatter. This change of lens shape is called accommodation, and rods handle dim shapes while cones give bright colour and detail.

Short sight means the eye bends far rays too strongly, so the image lands in front of the retina and a spreading lens pushes it back. Long sight means weak bending lands the image behind the retina, and an extra-bending lens pulls it forward.
