## Ready when they can

- Name all five oceans: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, Arctic
- Locate at least three oceans on a world map
- Explain that the five named oceans are all connected as one continuous body of water

## Lesson: The Five Oceans

Look at a world map and you will see blue everywhere. All of that blue water is really one giant ocean, but people split it into five named parts: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and Arctic.

*(drawing: The Pacific is the biggest ocean of all. The Arctic is the smallest, and it is also the iciest.)*

**Example.** Mia spins a globe and traces her finger across the blue parts. She starts at the huge Pacific, slides to the Atlantic, then the Indian, down to the Southern near the icy bottom, and up to the frozen Arctic at the top. Her finger never has to lift off the water, because every ocean touches the next one.

**Tip.** Remember: oceans are not five separate ponds. They are one connected body of water, so if you started sailing in any ocean, you could reach every other ocean without ever touching land.

**Recap.** There are five oceans, Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and Arctic, and they are all one connected body of water.
