# The Layered Atmosphere and Why Temperature Reverses With Height

Air thins smoothly with height but temperature does not, and each reversal marks a different thing absorbing radiation. Those temperature layers decide where air can rise, which is why nearly all weather is trapped in the bottom one.

## Lesson: Why the sky flips from cold to warm

You live at the bottom of an ocean of air. Gravity holds it down, and the weight of all the air above sets the pressure you feel. Climb upward and the air thins in one smooth slide. Temperature refuses the same smooth path: it falls, then rises, then falls again, then rises once more. Each reversal draws a boundary, and those boundaries name the layers.

The lowest layer is the troposphere, home of nearly all weather. It is heated from below, because the ground soaks up visible sunlight and warms the air touching it. So it cools as you climb. Warm air near the surface rises while cool air sinks, and that endless overturning stirs the clouds and storms you watch each day.

**Example.** Above sits the stratosphere, where the pattern flips and temperature climbs with height. The heater here is ozone, which drinks ultraviolet sunlight and turns it into warmth. The ozone layer sits exactly where this warming happens, since where the absorber sits decides where the warming lands. Higher still the mesosphere cools again, and the thermosphere grows fiercely hot as thin gas catches the most energetic rays. Every flip is a signpost for a new absorber.

**Tip.** A layer that warms upward is a lid. A rising parcel cools as it climbs, finds itself colder than its neighbours, and sinks straight back, so the layer barely mixes. That is why the boundary at the stratosphere's base, the tropopause, caps your weather like a ceiling. Learn the rule and the sky makes sense: warming with height always means stability.
