# The most successful animals on Earth

The most successful animals on Earth: there are roughly one million described insect species, and scientists estimate 5–10 million may exist. More insect species than all other animal groups combined. Why so many? Small body size means less food needed, fast reproduction with many offspring, flight allows reaching new habitats, and the exoskeleton is incredibly versatile.

## Ready when they can

- State that insects are the most species-rich group of animals with about one million known species
- Give at least two reasons why insects are so successful such as small size, fast reproduction, or flight
- Compare insect diversity to another animal group, explaining that there are far more insect species than mammals or birds

## Lesson: More kinds of insects than anything else

Look outside and you will probably spot an insect before any other animal. That is no accident. Scientists have described about one million insect species, more than every other kind of animal put together. There could be five to ten million insect species in total, most still waiting to be found and named.

*(drawing: Each block stands for a thousand species. Insects alone add up to roughly a million, more than all other animals combined.)*

**Example.** Think about mammals: animals like dogs, elephants, and bats. There are only about 6,000 known mammal species. For every one kind of mammal, there are roughly 150 kinds of insects.

So why are insects so successful? A small body needs very little food, so millions can live in a single field. Most insects reproduce fast, laying dozens or even hundreds of eggs at once, so their numbers bounce back quickly. Many insects can fly, which lets them cross rivers, find new food, and settle into fresh habitats. Their hard exoskeleton protects them while bending into endless shapes, from a beetle's armor to a butterfly's wing.

**Tip.** Next time you see a beetle, ant, or moth, remember it belongs to one of roughly a million known insect species, with likely millions more still unnamed.

**Recap.** Insects outnumber every other animal group combined, thanks to their small size, fast reproduction, flight, and adaptable exoskeleton.
