# The Specific Immune Response: Phagocytes, T Cells and B Cells

Beyond the general defences sits a response tailored to one antigen, built by cells that recognise a shape and then divide. Memory cells are why the second exposure is faster, and they are what a vaccine is actually for.

## Lesson: Your immune system learns its enemy

You are born with general defences, and then your body builds a second layer that learns. This adaptive response aims at one exact shape on one exact invader, and it remembers. The first meeting takes days, because the matching cells must be found and multiplied. The next meeting with the same antigen is faster and stronger, because memory cells are already waiting.

The tailored fight starts with a phagocyte. It swallows a pathogen, then shows pieces of it on its surface for T cells to inspect. This showing step is called antigen presentation, and it wakes helper T cells. Those helpers switch on the chosen B and T cells, which divide again and again. This choosing and copying is clonal selection: some copies fight now, and some stay behind as memory cells.

**Example.** The response has two arms. B cells lead the humoral arm: they become plasma cells that release antibodies into your blood and fluids, and the antibodies stick to antigens to mark them. T cells lead the cell-mediated arm: helper T cells coordinate the attack, while cytotoxic T cells destroy your own cells once infected. Fluids or infected cells: that split tells you which arm is working.

**Tip.** Keep two mix-ups out of your head. B cells do not kill infected cells, and antibodies do not patrol inside cells. Also remember that a vaccine builds the same memory without the sickness, because meeting the antigen is what leaves the waiting cells behind. Also remember tolerance: the system leaves your own healthy cells alone, which is a different job from building memory through vaccines.
