# The Stress Response: Fast Nerves, Slow Hormones and the Cost of Staying On

A threat triggers a nerve-driven response in seconds and a hormone-driven one over minutes to hours, and the two do different jobs. The system is useful when it switches off, and much of its damage comes from staying on.

## Lesson: Alarm now, cope later: the two arms of stress

A threat fires the fast arm in seconds. Sympathetic nerves reach the heart, lungs, and gut at once, and they also drive the adrenal medulla to release adrenaline. Heart rate and breathing climb, blood moves to muscle, and digestion shuts down. This buys you seconds for fight or flight.

The slow arm follows over minutes to hours. Signals through the HPA axis make the pituitary release ACTH, which tells the adrenal cortex to release cortisol. Cortisol raises available blood fuel and damps immune and inflammatory work, saving energy for the crisis. Adrenaline is an amine that hits surface receptors fast, while cortisol is a steroid that works largely through gene regulation, which is why it runs slower.

**Example.** Picture a firefighter at a call. Adrenaline surges as the alarm sounds, and cortisol budgets fuel through the long hours after. When the threat passes, falling cortisol reopens normal immune and repair work, and the parasympathetic division restores rest and digest. The system pays back only when it switches off.

**Tip.** Brief stress helps because it ends. When activation sticks on, the costs pile up: persistently high blood sugar with suppressed immunity and slower healing, the exhaustion stage of the stress response.
