# The World of Minibeasts

Know that insects and other minibeasts (spiders, worms, snails, centipedes) are the most numerous and diverse group of animals on Earth — there are more species of beetle than any other animal — and that they play vital roles as pollinators (bees, butterflies), decomposers (woodlice, worms), and food for other animals

## Ready when they can

- Knows that insects/minibeasts are the most numerous animal group
- Names at least 3 roles minibeasts play: pollinators, decomposers, food source
- Distinguishes insects (6 legs) from spiders (8 legs) from other minibeasts
- Shows appreciation for the importance of invertebrates

## Lesson: The World of Minibeasts

Minibeasts are the small creatures living all around you: insects, spiders, worms, snails, and centipedes. There are more kinds of minibeasts than any other kind of animal on Earth. In fact, there are more kinds of beetle than any other single animal.

*(drawing: Insects have 6 legs. Spiders have 8. Counting legs helps you tell them apart.)*

**Example.** Maya finds a ladybird in the grass. She counts six legs, so she knows it is an insect, not a spider. Ladybirds are a kind of beetle, and beetles are insects.

Minibeasts do jobs that help the whole natural world. Bees and butterflies carry pollen from flower to flower, so new fruits and seeds can grow. Woodlice and worms eat dead leaves and turn them into rich soil. And minibeasts are food for birds, frogs, and many other animals.

**Tip.** Next time you spot a minibeast, count its legs first. Six legs means it's an insect. Eight legs means it's a spider or another arachnid.

**Recap.** Minibeasts are the most varied animals on Earth, and they pollinate plants, break down dead things, and feed other animals.
