# Threats to insects and conservation

Threats to insects and conservation: insect populations are declining worldwide. Causes include habitat loss, pesticide use, light pollution disrupting nocturnal insects, and climate change. Pollinator decline threatens food production. What children can do: plant pollinator-friendly gardens, reduce pesticide use, participate in citizen science like the Big Butterfly Count.

## Ready when they can

- Name at least three threats to insect populations such as habitat loss, pesticides, and light pollution
- Explain why declining bee populations are a problem for humans and the food we eat
- Suggest at least two actions that children or families can take to help insects such as planting wildflowers or joining a butterfly count

## Lesson: Insects in trouble: threats and how to help

All over the world, insect numbers are falling. Scientists who count bees, butterflies, and beetles are finding fewer of them than in past decades, in country after country.

A few things are causing this drop. Habitat loss removes the meadows, hedgerows, and wild patches insects need for food and shelter. Pesticides sprayed on farms and gardens can kill helpful insects along with the pests they target. Bright lights left on at night confuse moths and other nocturnal insects, throwing off how they find food and mates. Climate change is also shifting when flowers bloom, so insects sometimes hatch too early or too late to find the food they expect.

*(drawing: This chart shows how bee numbers have dropped since 1980.)*

**Example.** Priya grows apples on her farm. Every spring, bees carry pollen from flower to flower so the blossoms can turn into fruit. One year, only about half as many bees visited her trees. That autumn, Priya's tree grew just 4 apples instead of her usual 10, because many flowers never got pollinated.

**Tip.** You can help insects too. Plant a few pollinator-friendly flowers in a garden or pot, ask your family to use less pesticide, and join a citizen science count like the Big Butterfly Count to help scientists track how insects are doing.

**Recap.** Insects are declining because of habitat loss, pesticides, light pollution, and climate change, but planting flowers and joining counts like the Big Butterfly Count can help them bounce back.
