# Time Dilation and Length Contraction

A moving clock runs slow and a moving ruler is short, by the same factor, as measured from the frame the motion is relative to. Muons reaching the ground are the everyday evidence.

## Lesson: Moving clocks run slow, moving rulers shrink

Picture a light clock bouncing light between mirrors on a moving ship. From the ground the light traces a longer zigzag, so each tick stretches: moving clocks run slow. The effect is symmetric, and each frame sees the other clock slow.

Gamma, written 1 over the square root of 1 minus v squared over c squared, is 1 at rest and grows with speed. Moving clocks slow by gamma, so gamma of 2 doubles the measured time, and moving lengths shrink along motion by gamma, so gamma of 2 halves them. Sizes across motion never change.

**Example.** Muons born high up should decay before landing, yet they reach us. Ground clocks say the muon clock runs slow so it lives longer, while the muon says the air layer is contracted so the trip is shorter. Both frames predict the same landing.

**Tip.** Stay consistent by pairing dilation with times and contraction with lengths in one setup. Both frames must agree on shared events like a landing.
