# Tissue Types and How a Body Is Organised

Every organ is built from four tissue types, and knowing which one you are looking at tells you what it can do: cover a surface, connect and support, contract, or signal. Reading a section under a microscope is a matter of matching structure to that short list.

## Lesson: Four tissues build every organ

Teams of cells that took on the same job by switching on the same genes build a tissue. Every tissue joins one of four families that grow from the early embryo layers: Epithelial tissue covers and lines while gating passage, connective tissue supports and binds, muscle contracts, and nervous tissue signals.

Each family looks like the work it does. Epithelial cells pack in tight sheets, connective cells scatter in a sea of matrix, muscle cells stretch into fibres packed with contractile proteins, and neurons sprout long branches to pass messages.

**Example.** Epithelial sheets rest on a basement membrane that anchors them and polices what crosses below. A tendon pulls because dense fibres pack its matrix, while bone holds weight because calcium salts harden its matrix into a rigid solid.

**Tip.** To read a section, name the pattern first: sheet, scattered cells in matrix, packed fibres, or branching cells. The family names the job.
