# Types of Teeth

Identify the four types of human teeth (incisors for cutting, canines for tearing, premolars and molars for grinding) and understand that tooth shape is linked to function, just as in other animals — herbivores have flat teeth, carnivores have sharp teeth

## Ready when they can

- Name the four tooth types and describe each one's job: incisors cut, canines tear, premolars/molars grind
- Compare human teeth to herbivore teeth (flat, for grinding plants) and carnivore teeth (sharp, for tearing meat)
- Explain that humans have all types because we are omnivores — we eat both plants and meat

## Lesson: Types of Teeth

Not every tooth in your mouth looks the same. Run your tongue around your mouth and you will feel flat teeth up front and pointy teeth beside them. Each shape has its own job.

There are four types of teeth, and each one has a job. Incisors are the flat teeth at the front, and they cut your food. Canines are the pointy teeth next to them, and they tear food. Premolars and molars are the wide, bumpy teeth in the back, and they grind food into tiny pieces you can swallow.

*(drawing: From front to back: incisors cut, canines tear, premolars and molars grind.)*

**Example.** Think about a rabbit and a lion. A rabbit only eats plants, so all its teeth are flat, perfect for grinding grass and leaves. A lion only eats meat, so its teeth are sharp and pointy, perfect for tearing meat off bones. You eat both plants and meat, so your mouth has flat grinding teeth and pointy tearing teeth too.

**Tip.** A tooth's shape always matches its job. Pointy teeth tear, flat teeth grind. Next time you eat, notice which teeth you are using.

**Recap.** Your mouth has four tooth shapes for four jobs: incisors cut, canines tear, and premolars and molars grind, because you eat both plants and meat.
