## Ready when they can

- Explain that minibeasts are small animals without a backbone found in gardens and parks
- Find at least three different minibeasts during a garden bug hunt under logs, stones, or leaves
- Use a magnifying glass to observe and describe one minibeast's appearance in detail

## Lesson: What is a minibeast?

A minibeast is a small animal. It has no backbone inside its body. You can find minibeasts in gardens and parks.

*(drawing: Can you spot three minibeasts hiding here?)*

**Example.** Ben lifts a stone in the garden. He finds a woodlouse curled in a ball. He watches it slowly uncurl and walk away.

**Tip.** Look gently. Do not squash or hurt the minibeasts. Put logs and stones back where you found them.

**Recap.** A minibeast is a small, backbone-free animal you can spot on a garden bug hunt.
