# Where Are the Poles?

Know that Earth has a North Pole and a South Pole — the two coldest places on the planet — and be able to find them on a globe, understanding that they are at the very top and very bottom of the Earth, as far from the Equator as possible

## Ready when they can

- Point to the North Pole and South Pole on a globe or world map
- Explain that the poles are the coldest places on Earth because they are farthest from the Equator
- State that the North Pole is at the top and the South Pole is at the bottom of the Earth

## Lesson: Where Are the Poles?

Earth is shaped like a giant ball. On a globe, the top and bottom are two of the coldest places.

*(drawing: The North Pole is the top. The South Pole is the bottom.)*

The Equator is the warm middle of Earth. The poles are far from it, so they stay icy cold.

**Example.** Mia spins a globe with her finger. She finds the top: North Pole. She finds the bottom: South Pole.

**Tip.** Look for the tippy top and tippy bottom of a globe. Those two spots are the poles.

**Recap.** North Pole is up top. South Pole is down at the bottom. Both are icy cold.
