What a learner can do afterwards

  • Compare how two mystery stories create suspense using different techniques
  • Identify common themes in adventure stories and explain how each author develops them differently
  • Analyse how two authors from the same genre approach the theme of friendship or courage

The lesson

You already know how to spot a theme, like courage or friendship, running through a story. Now try something new: look at two stories from the same genre, like two mysteries or two adventures, and ask how each author handles that same theme. One writer might show courage through a big daring rescue. Another might show it through a quiet decision nobody else notices. Same theme, different treatment.

Try it together

Two adventure books both share the theme of survival. In one, the hero stays calm by joking and using clever tricks. In the other, the hero survives by staying silent and watching nature closely. Same theme, two very different heroes.

Good to know

When you compare, ask three questions: What technique did each author use? Why might they have chosen it? Which one worked better for you as a reader?

One mystery drops a small clue every chapter, so you piece it together slowly. The other hides everything until a shocking twist at the end. Both are mysteries, but the suspense feels completely different.

Same theme, different authors, different choices, and noticing why is the whole point.
