What a learner can do afterwards

  • Identify a theme in a novel and explain how specific events develop it across the plot
  • Distinguish between the topic of a text (what it is about) and the theme (what it is saying)
  • Write a concise, objective summary of a chapter or article without inserting personal opinion

The lesson

A topic is what a text is about in a few words, like friendship or courage. A theme is what the text is saying about that topic, the deeper idea the writer wants you to notice. You already know how to spot a theme. Now you will trace how it grows from the first page to the last.

BeginningMiddleEnd
A theme rarely shows up all at once. It builds through the beginning, middle, and end of a story.
Try it together

A story opens with a girl too scared to try out for the soccer team. In the middle, a friend encourages her to practice. At the end, she tries out and feels proud, no matter the result. The topic is trying new things. The theme is that courage grows when someone supports you. Each part of the story adds a piece of that idea.

Good to know

When you write an objective summary, stick to what happened. Instead of 'I loved how brave she was,' write 'She tried out for the team despite her fear.' Save your opinion for a different kind of writing.

A theme is the deeper idea a text is saying about its topic, and you trace it by watching how key events build on each other from beginning to end.
