The lesson
Many words grow from the same root, the way branches grow from one tree trunk. Spot the root, and you can find its whole word family.
Look at the root "solve." It gives us solve, solution, solver, dissolve, and insoluble. Every one of these words connects back to finding an answer or breaking something apart.
Now try "cycle," a root about wheels or circles. From it come recycle, bicycle, and cyclist. Even if a word is new to you, the root gives you a clue to its meaning.
Next time you meet a strange word, look inside it for a root you already know. That root is your clue to what the word means.
