Long ago, people in Egypt believed in many gods. Each god had a special job. One god watched the sun. Another god watched over the river Nile.
Egyptians believed life did not stop at death. They thought a new life began after death. This new life was called the afterlife.
Think about a pharaoh who has just died. His helpers wrap his body with great care. They fill his tomb with food and gold rings. They also add his favorite toys and games.
Egyptians believed the afterlife was a wonderful place. That is why they filled tombs with treasures. The dead person could use these things again.
