The lesson
Most people in medieval times lived in villages. Houses had straw roofs called thatch. Fields of crops grew all around. A small church stood in the middle.
Sam lived in a village long ago. Every morning, he fetched water from the well. He helped his mother bake bread in a clay oven. In the afternoon, he worked in the fields.
Today, water comes from a tap. Ovens turn on with a switch. Long ago, people carried water in buckets. They baked bread over a fire.
Village life meant thatched homes and hard daily work, very different from today.
