The lesson
You already know how to find 10 more, 10 less, 100 more, and 100 less by changing one digit. Finding 1000 more or 1000 less works the same way. This time, it is the thousands digit that changes.
Look at 4,562. The thousands digit is 4. Add one to get 5, so 1000 more than 4,562 is 5,562. Subtract one to get 3, so 1000 less than 4,562 is 3,562. The 562 part never changes.
The same idea works on bigger numbers. Take 12,345. The thousands digit is 2. Add one to get 3, so 1000 more is 13,345. Subtract one to get 1, so 1000 less is 11,345.
Watch what happens when the thousands digit is 9. Adding 1000 to 9,608 rolls it to 10,608: a new ten-thousands digit appears and the thousands digit resets to 0. The digit-changing trick still works, just look one place further left.
1000 more or less always changes just the thousands digit, even for numbers past 10,000.
