A Hundred Is Ten Tens
Understand that 100 can be thought of as a bundle of ten tens — called a 'hundred'
What a learner can do afterwards
- Explain that 10 groups of 10 ones make 100
- Bundle ten tens sticks into one hundred and describe what happened
- Represent 100 using base-ten blocks showing 10 tens
The lesson
You already know that ten ones bundled together make one ten. Now bundle again. Take ten of those ten-bundles and put them all together. That big bundle gets a new name: a hundred.
Omar has ten bags. Each bag has ten pretzels. He pours all ten bags into one big bowl. Now the bowl has one hundred pretzels, because ten tens make a hundred.
When you write 100, the 1 sits in the hundreds spot. The two zeros mean there are no extra tens and no extra ones left over, just one full hundred.
Ten tens bundled together make one hundred, which is why 100 has a 1 in the hundreds place and two zeros after it.
