The lesson

Maths problems are not all the same, so you should not solve them all the same way. Some are quick enough to do in your head. Some are too big for that and need to be written down. Some are about shapes and positions, where a grid helps you see clearly. Picking the right tool is part of solving the problem well.

Look at 4,752 divided by 13. The numbers are large, so holding every step in your head is risky. You could easily lose track and get the wrong answer. Long division lays out each step on paper, so you can check your work as you go.

Try it together

Suppose a shape moves 3 squares right and 2 squares up. You could try to picture the move in your head, but it is easy to miscount. Plotting the shape's points on a coordinate grid before and after the move lets you check the answer for certain.

Good to know

Before you start, ask what the problem needs. Small numbers: use your head. Big numbers: write it down. Shapes and positions: use a grid. A rule that must work for any number: use algebra. A calculator can help too, once you know which method you are checking.

Choose the maths tool that fits the problem, not the one you reach for out of habit.
