What a learner can do afterwards
- Count forwards and backwards within 1000 from any starting number
- Skip-count by 5s from any multiple of 5 to 1000
- Skip-count by 100s from any number (e.g. 150, 250, 350 …)
The lesson
Numbers can get very big. You already know how to count by 2s, and you know the hundreds: 100, 200, 300. Now you will count all the way to 1,000, one at a time, by 5s, and by 100s.
Ben has 4 boxes with 100 blocks in each box. He skip-counts the boxes instead of counting every block: 100, 200, 300, 400. He already knows the hundreds, so counting on is fast.
Counting backward works the same way, just take away instead of add. From 400, subtract 100 each time: 400, 300, 200, 100, 0. If you lose your place, say the forward pattern first, then read it backward.
You can count forward or backward, by ones, by fives, or by hundreds, all the way to 1,000.
