The lesson

A kilogram and a gram both measure weight. A litre and a millilitre both measure liquid. To solve real problems, you often need to swap between the two units.

Remember these two facts: 1 kilogram equals 1000 grams, and 1 litre equals 1000 millilitres. To change kilograms into grams, or litres into millilitres, multiply by 1000. That moves the decimal point three places to the right.

Try it together

A recipe uses 0.75 kg of flour for one batch. First convert to grams: 0.75 kg × 1000 = 750 g. For 3 batches, multiply by 3: 750 g × 3 = 2250 g.

2.5 litres equals 2500 millilitres, which is more than 2450 millilitres.
Good to know

Before you compare or add measurements, put them in the same unit first. The number alone can trick you: 2450 looks bigger than 2.5, but once you convert, 2.5 litres turns out to be more.

Multiply by 1000 to turn kilograms into grams or litres into millilitres, and always convert to the same unit before comparing or adding.
