What a learner can do afterwards

  • Read 'fifty-seven' and write the numeral 57
  • Write 'eighty-three' when shown the numeral 83
  • Read and write all decade words (twenty, thirty … ninety) correctly

The lesson

You already know the words for numbers up to twenty. To write bigger numbers, join a decade word with a small word. The decade words are twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, and ninety. Put the two words together with a hyphen, like fifty-seven.

These are the decade words. Each one names a group of ten, from 20 to 90.
Try it together

Priya has 83 stickers. She looks at the 8 and thinks eighty. She looks at the 3 and thinks three. She joins them with a hyphen: eighty-three.

Good to know

When a number passes one hundred, write one hundred first, then and, then the rest. The number 103 becomes one hundred and three.

Join a decade word and a small word with a hyphen, like seventy-four, and after 100 add and, like one hundred and three.
