The lesson
You already know how to read and write numbers up to ten million. Now you will round them, order them, and work with negative numbers in real situations. To round a number, look at the digit right after the place you are rounding to. Five or more means round up. Less than five means round down.
A country's population is 8,274,500. For a news headline, round it to the nearest million. The digit right after the millions place is 2. Since 2 is less than 5, round down. The headline reads: Population reaches 8 million.
Some numbers are negative, like depths below sea level. A depth of -8,200 m is deeper than -3,400 m, even though 8,200 looks like the bigger number. The more negative a number is, the smaller it is, because it sits further from zero.
Round by checking the next digit, and remember: the more negative a number is, the smaller it is.
