The lesson

Real-life maths problems come in different shapes. You might scale a recipe up, measure a room for carpet, or work out a sale price. First pick the right way to solve it: multiplying, drawing a scale diagram, or using a bar model. Then check what your answer means in real life.

Try it together

A recipe for 4 people needs 200g of flour. You want to cook for 6 people. That is 1.5 times as many people, so multiply: 200 x 1.5 = 300g. The answer means you need 300g of flour, not 300 people.

Good to know

Once you have an answer, ask if it makes sense in real life. Grams should be a sensible weight, square metres should fit a normal room, and a sale price should always be less than the full price.
