Understand their rights and responsibilities as a member of a community — that everyone has a right to be treated with respect and to feel safe, and that with rights come responsibilities to treat others the same way

The lesson
A right is something every person can count on, no matter who they are. Every kid has the right to feel safe, the right to learn, and the right to be treated with respect.
A responsibility is what you do so that other people can have those same rights too. If you want to feel safe, you also have a responsibility to help others feel safe.
At recess, every kid has a right to play without being pushed around. That right comes with a responsibility: play fair, and never bully. When a student tells a teacher that a classmate is being left out, they use their own right to speak up, and they help build a safer playground for everyone.
Whenever you think of a right you have, ask yourself what responsibility comes with it. Rights and responsibilities work as a team, not two separate things.
Every right you have comes with a responsibility to protect that same right for others.
