The lesson
Every habit runs on a loop: something triggers it, you do the routine, and you get a reward. Once you notice the loop, you can build habits on purpose instead of by accident.
Wanting to do something for its own sake is called intrinsic motivation. Doing it for a reward or to avoid punishment is extrinsic motivation. Extrinsic rewards can help you start something new, but intrinsic motivation is what keeps a habit going for months. Three things make intrinsic motivation stronger: autonomy (the choice feels like yours), competence (you feel yourself improving), and relatedness (you feel connected to people who care).
Priya keeps putting off her science project. She is not lazy. Every time she opens her laptop, she feels a jolt of anxiety about not knowing where to start, so she closes it and scrolls her phone instead. That relief is the real reason she avoids the project, not poor time management.
Make the habit you want easier to start, and the habit you want to avoid harder to start. Lay out your running shoes the night before, or put your phone in another room while you study. Small changes to your surroundings beat relying on willpower alone.
