Basic Body Needs
Know that the body needs food for energy, water to stay hydrated, sleep to rest and grow, and exercise to keep muscles and the heart strong — and that these are basic needs every human body has
What a learner can do afterwards
- List the four basic needs: food (energy), water (hydration), sleep (rest and growth), exercise (strength)
- Explain that food gives the body energy to move, think, and grow
- Describe what happens if one need isn't met (e.g. feeling tired without sleep, thirsty without water)
The lesson
Your body needs four things every day. It needs food, water, sleep, and exercise. These are called basic needs.
Food gives your body energy. Energy helps you run, think, and grow. Water keeps you from feeling thirsty.
Mia forgot to drink water at recess. By lunch, her mouth felt dry and she felt tired. She drank water and felt better fast.
Sleep helps your body rest and grow. Exercise makes your muscles and heart strong.
Food, water, sleep, and exercise: your body needs all four every day.
