The lesson

Your body works best at one particular temperature: about 37°C. When you get too hot or too cold, your brain notices and sends signals to fix it. This constant checking and adjusting is called homeostasis. It means your body's internal conditions, like temperature, stay steady even when the world around you changes.

Your skin plays a big part in this. It has sweat glands that can release sweat, and tiny blood vessels that can widen or narrow. When your brain senses a change in temperature, it tells your skin how to react.

When you get too hot: sweat glands turn on, sweat evaporates off your skin, and that evaporation pulls heat away. Blood vessels near your skin also widen (vasodilation), moving warm blood close to the surface so heat can escape.

One winter afternoon, Priya waits outside without a coat. Her skin looks pale and she starts to shiver. Her blood vessels near the skin have narrowed (vasoconstriction), keeping warm blood deeper in her body. At the same time, her muscles shiver, contracting quickly over and over. Shivering uses energy and produces heat, warming her back up.

Good to know

Your body doesn't do this just to feel comfortable. The chemical reactions inside your cells depend on enzymes, and enzymes only work well within a narrow temperature range. If your core temperature drifts too far from 37°C, those reactions slow down or stop working properly.

Homeostasis keeps your core body temperature near 37°C, using sweating and vasodilation to cool you down and shivering and vasoconstriction to warm you up, because your enzymes need that steady temperature to work.
