Bones & Muscles

Know that the body has a skeleton made of bones inside it that gives the body its shape and protects important organs like the brain (skull) and heart (ribcage), and that muscles attached to bones allow the body to move

What a learner can do afterwards

  • State that bones give the body shape, support, and protection
  • Name at least three bones or bone groups (e.g. skull, ribcage, spine, leg bones)
  • Explain that muscles pull on bones to make the body move

The lesson

Inside your body are hard parts called bones. All your bones together make up your skeleton.

Your skeleton holds your body up and gives it shape. Bones also protect soft parts inside you.

Try it together

Feel the top of your head. That hard bone is your skull. It protects your brain inside.

Your ribs curve around your chest like a cage. They protect your heart and lungs. Your spine and leg bones help you stand and walk.

Good to know

Try bending your arm. Muscles pull on your bones to make you move.

Watch what happens when you bend your arm: the muscle pulls the bone, and the arm moves.

Bones give your body shape and protect it. Muscles pull bones to make you move.
