You know where the South Pole is. Long ago, Robert Falcon Scott and Roald Amundsen each led a team there. Both teams wanted to arrive first.
Amundsen's team reached the South Pole first and left a flag. Scott's team arrived weeks later. Scott saw the flag and knew that Amundsen had arrived before him. He felt disappointed.
Ernest Shackleton sailed to Antarctica on Endurance. Ice trapped and crushed the ship. The crew left the damaged ship and camped on the ice. Later, Endurance sank. Everyone from the ship was still alive.
The crew used small boats to reach an island. Shackleton and a small group then sailed for help. After a long wait, the people left on the island were rescued. Everyone from Endurance survived.
Amundsen reached the South Pole before Scott. Everyone from Endurance survived after escape and rescue.
