The lesson
For a very long time, people believed Earth stood still in the middle of everything, and the Sun, Moon, and stars all circled around it. This idea is called the geocentric model, from a word that means Earth. A thinker named Ptolemy wrote down this idea almost 2,000 years ago, and most people trusted it for centuries.
About 500 years ago, a man named Copernicus looked at the sky in a new way. He said Earth was not standing still after all. Instead, Earth and the other planets travel around the Sun. This is the heliocentric model, and helios is an old word for Sun. Many people did not believe him at first, since it was such a different way of thinking.
Galileo built one of the first strong telescopes and pointed it at Jupiter. Night after night, he saw four small points of light moving around the planet: moons, circling Jupiter and not Earth. If everything really circled Earth, those moons should not exist. Galileo's telescope gave real proof that Copernicus's idea was right.
New evidence can change what people believe, even ideas that lasted a thousand years. That is how science moves forward.
