The lesson

A community is a group of people who live and work together. When a community wants to protect the Earth's resources, like clean water, forests, or fresh air, people use science ideas to figure out what will actually work.

Try it together

The town of Elm Ridge put solar panels on its school and library roofs. Solar panels use sunlight to make electricity. Because the buildings get power from the sun, the town burns less coal and gas, which keeps the air cleaner.

Try it together

Volunteers in Lakeview meet every month to pull trash out of the river. Removing plastic and litter keeps the water clean for fish and for people who drink from it downstream.

Good to know

No single person can install solar panels on every roof or clean an entire river alone. But when many people each do a small part, like riding a bike instead of driving or picking up litter, those small actions add up to a big change for the whole community.
