The lesson

Some of the best feathered dinosaur fossils come from the Liaoning Formation in China. Volcanic ash buried these animals quickly and kept fine details, even feathers, preserved in the rock.

Try it together

Three fossils each tell a different part of the story. Sinosauropteryx had short fuzzy filaments, an early kind of feather used for warmth, not flight. Anchiornis had feathers on all four limbs, and scientists even found traces of its original colors. Microraptor also had four feathered limbs and long tail feathers, built more like a glider than a flyer.

Archaeopteryx shows the mix clearly. It had feathers and a wishbone, both bird features. But it also had teeth, clawed fingers on its wings, and a long bony tail, all dinosaur features. No living bird has any of those three.

Good to know

Scientists still debate how flight began. The ground-up idea says small dinosaurs ran and jumped after prey, flapping their arms for lift. The trees-down idea says animals like Microraptor glided down from branches. Both use real fossil evidence.
