What a learner can do afterwards

  • Draw a diagram showing light source → light hits object → reflects into eye
  • Explain that we see objects because reflected light enters our eyes, not because our eyes send out light
  • Use this model to explain why we can't see in total darkness (no light to reflect)

The lesson

You see a book because light bounces off it and lands in your eye. Your eyes do not send out light of their own. They only take light in.

Try it together

Mia turns on a lamp and looks at her red backpack. Light from the lamp travels to the backpack, bounces off it, and enters Mia's eyes. That is how she sees the backpack, and why it looks red to her.

Good to know

Turn off every light in a room and close the curtains. You cannot see anything, not because your eyes stopped working, but because there is no light left to bounce off objects and reach your eyes.

You see objects because light reflects off them and enters your eyes. No light, no sight.
