The lesson
Insects have body parts that work nothing like ours. Take an eye: yours has one lens, but a dragonfly's eye is built from up to 30,000 tiny lenses called ommatidia. Each lens sees its own narrow slice of the world, and the insect's brain stitches the slices together. That is why insects notice the smallest flicker of movement before you do.
Insects do not have lungs. Along the sides of the body are small holes called spiracles. Air passes through the spiracles into a network of thin tubes that carry oxygen straight to every cell, with no heart needed to deliver it.
A beetle bites through a tough leaf with two hard mandibles that work like a pair of scissors. A butterfly has no mandibles at all. It drinks with a proboscis, a long tube that stays curled like a party blower until it unrolls into a flower to sip nectar. A house fly does neither. It presses a spongy pad onto its food and soaks up the liquid like a mop.
An insect's exoskeleton is hard and cannot grow with the insect inside it. So the insect builds a new, softer exoskeleton underneath, splits the old one open, and climbs out. This is called moulting, and most insects moult several times before they stop growing.
Engineers copy insect designs to solve real problems. Camera makers have built compound-eye lenses, modelled on an insect's thousands of tiny lenses, to give drones an almost all-around view in one shot. Copying an insect's body is often faster than inventing something from scratch.
