The lesson

A neuron sends its message as a tiny electrical pulse. That pulse races down a long fiber called an axon, all the way to the very end of the cell.

At the synapse, the electrical pulse cannot jump the gap. The neuron releases a chemical called a neurotransmitter, which crosses over and starts a new pulse in the next neuron.

Your brain's outer layer is split into four lobes. The frontal lobe handles thinking, decisions, and movement. The parietal lobe processes touch and spatial sense. The temporal lobe handles hearing and memory. The occipital lobe processes what you see. Deeper inside sits the limbic system, which drives emotions like fear and happiness.

Try it together

Think about learning to play piano. The first time you try a chord, the signal between neurons travels slowly and weakly. Practice the same chord night after night, and that pathway gets used again and again. The connection grows stronger and the signal travels faster, so your fingers find the chord almost without thinking.

Good to know

This rewiring is called neuroplasticity, and it is also why your brain gets fooled by optical illusions. Your brain does not just record what your eyes see. It builds its best guess from patterns it has learned, and sometimes that guess is wrong.
