The lesson

You already know that light and sound can carry messages. People have used that idea to build real codes: patterns that stand for letters and words.

Try it together

Samuel Morse turned each letter into a pattern of short and long signals: dots and dashes. Three dots, three dashes, three dots means SOS, the message ships send when they need help.

Sailors used flags held in different positions. Each pattern stands for a letter, so a ship far away can read the message without hearing a single sound.

Drums work differently. Villages sent patterns of beats that travel through the air over long distances, even when it is too dark to see a flag or too far to hear a shout.

Good to know

Light codes need a clear view. Sound codes work in the dark or through walls but need a quiet place to listen. Comparing systems helps you pick the one that fits where you are.
