The lesson
You already know rainforests give us food like cocoa and bananas. But rainforest plants also end up in places that are not food at all. Palm oil often hides in soap and shampoo. Rubber becomes tyres and gloves. Timber becomes furniture and floors. Some medicines even start as chemicals found in rainforest plants.
Ben checks the ingredients on his shampoo bottle and spots 'sodium palmate.' That's a form of palm oil. The fruit grew on a farm near a rainforest, was crushed at a mill, and was shipped to a factory that makes shampoo, long before it reached his bathroom shelf.
Look for a small frog logo or the words 'Rainforest Alliance Certified' on packaging. It means the farm followed rules that protect trees and wildlife instead of clearing more forest.
Rainforest products like palm oil, rubber, and timber travel through farms, mills, and factories before reaching stores, and choosing certified products helps protect the forests they come from.
