The lesson
Almost seventy years ago, two countries raced to be first in space: the United States and the Soviet Union. In 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the first satellite ever sent into orbit. It was just a small metal ball with an antenna, but it changed history. Four years later, in 1961, a Soviet pilot named Yuri Gagarin became the first person to travel into space.
On July 20, 1969, the Apollo 11 spacecraft landed on the Moon. Neil Armstrong stepped out first, followed by Buzz Aldrin. A third astronaut, Michael Collins, stayed in orbit above, flying the command ship that would bring them all home.
After the Moon landings, space travel kept changing. NASA built the Space Shuttle, a reusable spacecraft that flew missions for 30 years. Then astronauts from many countries started living and working together on the International Space Station, orbiting Earth non-stop since 1998. Today, NASA's Artemis programme is preparing to send astronauts back to the Moon, and companies like SpaceX are launching astronauts and building rockets aimed at Mars.
