The lesson
You already know some animals blend into their surroundings and some travel long distances each year. Those are both adaptations: features or behaviors that help an animal survive where it lives. Scientists sort adaptations into three groups. Structural adaptations are body parts, like a giraffe's long neck or an eagle's sharp talons. Behavioural adaptations are things an animal does, like migrating or hibernating. Physiological adaptations happen inside the body, like antifreeze in a fish's blood.
A woodpecker pecks a tree fast and hard, over and over. Its strong beak breaks into wood. Its long tongue reaches insects deep inside. Its skull absorbs the shock so its brain is not hurt. All three are structural adaptations: body parts built for this exact job.
Some adaptations you cannot see from outside. Arctic fish have a kind of antifreeze in their blood so it does not turn to ice in freezing water. That is a physiological adaptation. Bats send out sound waves and listen for the echoes to find insects in the dark, called echolocation, which is physiological too. Animals also adapt through behaviour: geese migrate south for winter, some bears hibernate through the cold months, and crows use twigs as tools to pull grubs out of bark.
No single animal grows a longer neck or gains antifreeze blood during its own life. Adaptations build up over many, many generations. Animals born with a helpful feature survive and have young more often, so the feature spreads. That slow process is called natural selection.
