The lesson
In a story called Through the Looking-Glass, the Red Queen tells Alice that in her world you have to keep running just to stay in the same place. Scientists borrow that idea to explain something odd in nature. Two species that depend on each other, like a hunter and its prey, both keep evolving new tricks. Neither one ever truly gets ahead, because the other side keeps catching up.
Bats hunt moths at night using echolocation, bouncing sound off their prey to find them in the dark. Over time, some moths evolved ears tuned to that exact sound, so they can dive away or even send back a jamming signal. Neither the bat nor the moth gets to keep a permanent edge. Each new trick from one side pushes the other to evolve a counter-trick.
In the 1950s, a virus called myxomatosis was introduced to control European rabbit populations. At first it killed almost every rabbit it infected. Rabbits with natural resistance survived and had more babies, so resistance spread through the population. At the same time, the virus evolved to be a little less deadly, because a rabbit that lives longer lets the virus spread to more new hosts. Host and parasite kept adjusting to each other.
Co-evolution does not only happen between enemies. Darwin studied an orchid with a nectar tube almost a foot long and predicted a moth with a matching long tongue had to exist, even though nobody had ever seen one. Decades later, scientists found it. Partners that help each other, like a flower and its pollinator, can shape each other's bodies just as strongly as predators and prey do, and this ongoing back-and-forth is a major reason life on Earth became so varied.
An evolutionary arms race never really ends: predator and prey, or parasite and host, keep evolving just to stay even with each other.
