The lesson

You already know that many species are endangered or extinct. Scientists can now put a number on how fast this is happening. Species are disappearing 100 to 1,000 times faster than the natural background rate, the slow pace at which species vanished before humans spread across the planet.

Researchers measure this loss a few ways. The species-area relationship predicts how many species vanish when a habitat shrinks: lose most of the land, and you lose a large share of the species living there. Population viability analysis models whether a group of animals is large and healthy enough to survive for decades. The IUCN Red List sorts species into categories, from Least Concern to Critically Endangered to Extinct, based on how much danger they face.

In 1995, wolves returned to Yellowstone after being gone for 70 years. Elk started avoiding open valleys where wolves could catch them easily. Willow and aspen trees, which elk had been eating down to stubs, grew tall again. Beavers came back to use the new willow for dams. Their dams slowed streams and built up riverbanks, and over years some rivers shifted course. One predator changed the shape of a landscape.

Small populations face extra risk even without new threats. A minimum viable population is the smallest group likely to survive for generations without dying out from bad luck alone, like a disease outbreak or a run of poor breeding years. The Iberian lynx dropped below 100 adults in the early 2000s, but careful breeding and habitat protection brought numbers back into the thousands. With limited money and time, conservationists often have to choose which species to help first. This is called conservation triage, and it raises hard questions: save the species most likely to survive, the most unique one, or the one most useful to its ecosystem? There is no single right answer.

The extinction crisis is real and measurable, but Yellowstone's wolves and Spain's lynx show that bringing back one species can rebuild a whole ecosystem.
