The lesson
You already know the poles can have daylight at midnight, or darkness at noon. Here is why: Earth does not spin straight up and down. It leans over, tilted about 23.5 degrees, like a spinning top that got knocked a little sideways. As Earth travels around the Sun for a whole year, that lean always points the same direction in space. So for half the year, the North Pole leans toward the Sun, and for the other half, it leans away.
Think about a mother polar bear in the Arctic. All through the dark winter, she hunts seals from the frozen sea ice. When summer comes and the Sun stays up day and night, the ice melts and breaks apart, so she heads to land until the freezing dark returns and the ice grows back.
Remember: it is not that summer is closer to the Sun. It is the tilt of Earth's axis that swings each pole toward the sunlight, then away from it, all year long.
