Dance: Telling a Story Without Words

Dance carries meaning through the body: how big a movement is, how fast, how high, and whether it repeats. A dance can tell a story or show a feeling with no words at all.

What a learner can do afterwards

  • Describe a movement using size, speed, level and direction
  • Match a movement to a mood in the music and say why it fits
  • Spot a movement that repeats in a dance and say what the repeat does
  • Watch a short dance and say what it seemed to be about

1 · Read

Dance speaks through the body. To describe a move, name its size, its speed, its level, and its direction. Big or small, fast or slow, high or low, forward or back.

Try it together

Mina hears slow soft music and folds low to the floor. Low and slow fits sad music, while big fast jumps fit happy music. The move matches the mood, and you can say why.

Dancers repeat moves on purpose. A repeat can mark the best part of the dance. It can also show a feeling growing stronger each time it comes back.

Good to know

Watch a short dance twice. First track the moves. Then ask what it seemed to be about, and point at the move that told you.

Name each move by size, speed, level and direction, then say what feeling they carry.

2 · Watch

Take it off screen

Print a worksheetA4 with an answer key page for grown-ups. No screen, no internet.

Then practise

8 questions wait behind this lesson, each with its answer explained. Every answer feeds the sky: stars light as they are learned, and dim when it is time to come back.
