The blues grew out of African American life in the Deep South. Its roots reach back to work songs, field hollers, and spirituals sung by enslaved people and later sharecroppers. That history matters, because the blues turned hard times into something you could sing.
Most blues follows a 12-bar pattern, a repeating loop of chords twelve measures long. Singers use call and response: sing a line, repeat it, then answer it. Try it on something that frustrated you this week.
The blues borrows freely, mixing African rhythms, church music, and folk songs. Later it handed its chords and attitude down to jazz, rock, and soul. A bent rock note or a stretched soul word is the blues traveling forward in time.
The line runs through books too. Ralph Ellison built scenes in Invisible Man the way blues singers build verses, returning to ideas with a twist each time. Each style keeps something from the last and throws something away.
Blues turned hard times into song, then handed its shape to the music that followed.
